Bedroom Glamour

For the final project in my University, the senior Interior Design students were asked to look for an actual client, and our objective was to design a living space of at least 9 square meters. It could be a living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, or even multiple, as long as it measures 9 square meters at the least. Anyway, I’d like to share my greatest achievement as an Interior Design student, so here it goes!

Here are some snaps of the room prior to “Paula’s touch” (haha):

As you can see, the room is quite dull and bare, but after interviewing and getting to know my client more, I came up with this inspiration board to help in the planning process.

Situated in a quiet town of the city of Parañaque, where citizens of the metro seek ease and comfort, away from the busy streets and traffic lights, and into a sleek and lustrous home. The modern residence of the Lim family has the perfect elements of a clean and cozy household that will definitely bring a breath of fresh air upon entry.

The house’s interior adapts the style of modern minimalist, with very masculine yet glamorous elements, together with the dominantly white walls and bold straight lines. With very minimal splashes of colour, the house in general is a canvas for what the beauty of equanimity has to convey across the interior of the home.

The purpose of this project was to successfully apply design solutions to a girl’s bedroom, applying the eclectic fusion of modern and shabby chic elements, to satisfy the client’s design preferences. The design solutions have the intent and the goal to promote proper space planning and proper application of design elements so as to create interior spaces that foster a healthier and a more lively interior space, as well as a progressive and conductive learning and working environment for the user; an interior space that nurtures individuality and eccentricity, and one that will allow the user to express herself freely. I aspired for this project to be able to promote the importance of self-reliance and self-awareness, as it plays an important role in the upbringing of any individual.

The following are the technical drawings I made on AutoCAD:

Subsequent to the many late nights I stayed up planning, drafting and redrafting the technical drawings is where the fun begins! I took my client shopping for all the materials, furniture and finishings we needed!

Here are some snaps of our mini field trip around the metro:

Finale!

In this project, I intended to convey most the peace and comfort one wishes to find when they are secluded in an area of privacy. The room caters to all the needs and wants of client Robin Lim—a place where she can feel free to be herself, and a place where she can be able to harness her talents and skills. Furthermore, it is a place where she can relax and feel a sense of security.

Most of the furniture pieces and accessories used are from a wide variety of thrift/surplus stores around Metro Manila. The furniture pieces were chosen to be compatible with the universal motif of the bedroom design—“vintage meets modern.” With this said, it is obvious that a juxtaposition of simple modern furniture and vintage and worn-out looking pieces was used in the bedroom interior to successfully achieve the design theme.

The lighting fixtures give such a feminine glam to the interior, especially with the carnation pink and pale mint colour combination that is seen in the entirety of the bedroom interior. Lighting has an essential role in setting up the mood of the interior. Lighting fixtures were maximized due to function, and as well as aesthetic purposes. Draperies were used in order to block daylight from entering the room, especially when one feels the need to go into deep slumber. However, lighting does not only give mood but also adds to the house’s sustainability, because all the lighting fixtures in the bedroom use LED and energy saving bulbs.

Whilst going through this project, I was able to explore the different possible outcomes of fusing motifs that are entirely different from one another. I was particularly drawn to the interesting combinations of old and new as well as exotic and chic. With this said, the project was challenging but at the same time very enjoyable, especially when the final product is ready to be enjoyed by a satisfied client.
